Question:
When you’re reading a book, what gets you hooked on it? Is is the character, plotline, prose? I know it can be a mixture of all, but what’s dominant for you?

Great Giveaway!!! I’ve never heard of this Camel Club series, I think I’d really like this one and I know I’d enjoy Divine Justice! I think the worm(s) that hook(s) me is/are the character(s), usually the main character. Of course in a mystery I love the suspense yet even in a Mary Higgins Clark book where you can see down the road of the plot, her characters hook me. So the characters are where it is at for me.
Thanks for this giveaway and good question!

Hi! Thanks for the chance to win this fascinating book. For me, it has to be the character. I have always enjoyed Agatha Christie and her characters of Miss Marple
and Poirot. Those characters kept me interested in the plotline of the books.

Books that appeal to me first off have to have a good location. If i see two books of the same genre and one is set in Britain and the other is set in Nebraska, I would pick the one in Britain in a heart beat. when i start to get into the story, the plot has to be engaging as i have read some books where I didn’t like the characters but liked the storyline. I know, I am weird! Please enter me in the contest. Thanks

I’d have to say the prose, before you even get to the character or plotline. The first Stephen King book I ever read was The Stand and it might have been the last because it became more of an effort to read as the plot continued. You know how it is. The same book that turned you off years ago can become your favorite today? Months later I picked up Thiner and couldn’t put it down. Shorter story more to the point.
I once tried reading Tabitha King and the prose just turned me off so after a few pages that was it and I haven’t read anything else from her.
It’s the way the author spins their web to lure you into their world until you feel like you’ve become a part of it. Like a bad movie the character or plot can only do so much to keep your attention.
For me it’s definitely the prose : D

It’s definitely the plot for me. I has to keep moving. The best characterization or prose isn’t going to save a slow book—and a slow book is the worst.
Thanks!

For me, it is definitely the plot. I can read about any type of character, but the plot must move along at a pace that keeps my interest.

I really enjoy David Baldacci’s books. Thanks for the great giveaway!
I have to say the plot is what hooks me on a book. Although, I do love to read books that are centered around a single character such as the Gabriel Allon series by Daniel Silva.

Hmmm.. I would have to say characters. I am reading a book right now - and the characters just seem flat to me. It is an ARC so I have to finish it… just not excited about it!!

The prose has to grab me to begin with. I will continue to read a book if the language is OK, especially if a person has recommended it to me. If the plot gets too convoluted I have to put it down. I will read a favorite author’s books even if the plot isn’t that great to begin with.

I love the Camel Club series although it freaks me out to believe the scenarios could happen in real life. I wonder how many trained killers are living “off the grid”. Could my neighbor be one?

Also if I’m not pulled in by the 5th page I either don’t bother or try at another time.
But usually it’s the main characters.
Thanks for the opportunity.

For me, it’s well developed characters and a twisted plot that keeps me wondering. I usually know once I’ve read the first few pages whether it will be one of those that I can’t seem to put down.

The book has to grab my interest from the beginning. If i can’t get into the plot or don’t like the character’s by the third chapter, I put the book down and ususally don’t try again. So many books so little time.
Thanks for offering a chance to win free books.

Characters first. If the characters don’t “feel real”, I don’t expect the plot to help.

I’m usually most hooked by the characters because I’ve found that sometimes a slow start can get pretty interesting after awhile. If the characters are interesting, I’ll enjoy whatever they’re doing.

I like the main character to have a sense of humor. I love books that are suspenseful, but have some funny parts or comments to break up the tension. Books that are maudlin or depressing are a big turnoff for me.

My dad reads Baldacci, but I haven’t picked up any yet. I’m not sure if he has this one though.
as for the question… It’s got to be the plot for me, though I think that depends on the writing style too. The characters would be a winning reason as well.
