9781600245749_154X233 The Scarecrow (Unabridged audio)
Michael Connelly (author)
Peter Giles (reader)

About this audio:
Forced out of the Los Angeles Times amid the latest budget cuts, newspaperman Jack McEvoy decides to go out with a bang, using his final days at the paper to write the definitive murder story of his career.

He focuses on Alonzo Winslow, a 16-year-old drug dealer in jail after confessing to a brutal murder. But as he delves into the story, Jack realizes that Winslow’s so-called confession is bogus. The kid might actually be innocent.

Jack is soon running with his biggest story since The Poet made his career years ago. He is tracking a killer who operates completely below police radar–and with perfect knowledge of any move against him. Including Jack’s.

About the author: (from his website)
Michael Connelly decided to become a writer after discovering the books of Raymond Chandler while attending the University of Florida. Once he decided on this direction he chose a major in journalism and a minor in creative writing — a curriculum in which one of his teachers was novelist Harry Crews.

After graduating in 1980, Connelly worked at newspapers in Daytona Beach and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, primarily specializing in the crime beat. In Fort Lauderdale he wrote about police and crime during the height of the murder and violence wave that rolled over South Florida during the so-called cocaine wars. In 1986, he and two other reporters spent several months interviewing survivors of a major airline crash. They wrote a magazine story on the crash and the survivors which was later short-listed for the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing. The magazine story also moved Connelly into the upper levels of journalism, landing him a job as a crime reporter for the Los Angeles Times, one of the largest papers in the country, and bringing him to the city of which his literary hero, Chandler, had written. OMG! The reader is so important. If the reader is too “flat” or unemotional, it can totally ruin the experience.

My favorite reader is Richard Ferrone. I could listen to that man read the phone book! :) My favorite books he reads are the John Sandford “Prey” books, or the Stuart Woods Stone Barrington books. But anything he reads is wonderful!

I have a 1.5 hour commute each way to work, so naturally I have to have an audio book (and several “spares”) in my car at all times. I don’t think I could listen to it anywhere else — too many distractions.

I’m also subscribing! :)

+ Do readers make or break the book? I’ve never listened to a book that I didn’t like the reader. If the book draws me in and holds my interest, I’m hooked.

+ My favorite reader is Jim Dale

+ I think he recorded all 7 of the Harry Potter books.

+ I listen while I’m riding with my husband . . . I’ve tried to listen while I’m driving, but sometimes I get too involved. ;)

Without a doubt, the reader of an audio book can make or break a book! One of my favorite readers is Rene
Auberjonois reading Cemetery Dance. My husband and I enjoy listening to audio books during a long road trip.
My husband also enjoys listening to audio books going
to and from work. Also, I am an email subscriber to
your site. Please enter me in your audio book drawing.
Many thanks, Cindi

I listened to Next by Michael Crichton after trying to read it many times (and giving up) and the sole reason I was interested this time around was the reader, so I do think they can make or break the book.
I listen to audio books in the car, mostly over road trips and have recently started to listen to them at the gym on my ipod.
I’m also subscribed to you feed in my reader.
Thanks!

Michael Connelly’s The Scarecrow is so cool. I like his mystery of story writing. Real ingenious!

I think the reader lends a lot to the telling of the tale. My family listened to “Shiloh” on a long car ride. Richard Thomas narrated and did a wonderful job.

I’m a follower.

Yes the reader makes the audio book for me as they bring it to life.

My favorite reader is David Sedaris.

I loved When You Are Engulfed by Flames.

I think a reader definitely makes the book and for some reason I prefer a MALE reader. I don’t know if I have a specific favorite though…Also, I can listen to an audio book anywhere. But, in the car or on the beach is easiest!

I do believe the reader can make the audiobook because I don’t want to have dull reader to put me asleep while I’m drivings. I haven’t listened to enough audiobooks to have a favorite reader yet.

Sometimes the reader can make or break either I’m going to devote me time, but it is always the storyline and keeps me going, great storyline, keep listening.

My favorite reader is Jim Dale from the Harry Potter audio books, I’ve listened to and read all seven.

I have been known to listen in the car on long trips (then it’s kid friendly listening.) But, I also listen at home, makes the cleaning and laundry go faster.

If the reader doesn’t have a pleasing voice or one that lends itself to the story, I can’t get into the plot as they lose me.

My favorite reader has to be Rene Auberjonois who I recently heard read and also Julie Andrews who does children’s books.

I used to listen to audio books while driving to and from places but it wasn’t enough so now when my eyes are tired from reading a book, I can do some simple chore or just chill and listen at home.
