My Take:
I’ve included the product description below. I have less than two hundred pages to go with this book because reading this book is like going to a five star restaurant and experiencing the most scrumptious meal. I want to savor each word because I know that there can only be one ‘first time’ to read this book. Mary Pat Kelly captured my attention on the first pages of the book with Honora meeting Michael. They fell in love and know that they want to be together. Then they have children, and the great potato famine came. I find it very interesting that the book is told from Honora’s point of view, yet I can feel all that is going on.
There are some truly horific scenes in the book, but what separates this book from the rest are the sense of hope and strength of the main character. I’m most impressed with their sense of family and community. I would truly recommend this book for reading, even if it isn’t your genre. The writing is simply irresistible. It’s hard to read this book and not love it. Michael, Honora’s husband, is a good man and an excellent father. While reading this book, it’s like getting to know these characters. They become family.
Product Description
Here at last is one Irish family’s epic journey, capturing the tragedy and triumph of the Irish-American experience. In a rousing tale that echoes the myths and legends of Ireland herself, young Honora Keeley and Michael Kelly wed and start a family, inhabiting a hidden Ireland where fishermen and tenant farmers find solace in their ancient faith, songs, stories, and communal celebrations. Selling both their catch–and their crops–to survive, these people subsist on the potato crop–their only staple food. But when blight destroys the potatoes three times in four years, a callous government and uncaring landlords turn a natural disaster into The Great Starvation that will kill one million. Honora and Michael vow their children will live. The family joins two million other Irish refugees in one of the greatest rescues in human history: the Irish Emigration to America. Danger and hardship await them there. Honora and her unconventional sister Maire watch their seven sons as they transform Chicago from a frontier town to the “City of the Century”, fight the Civil War, and enlist in the cause of Ireland’s freedom. The Kelly clan is victorious. This heroic story sheds brilliant light on the ancestors of today’s 44 million Irish Americans.
In the author’s colorful and eclectic life, she has written and directed award-winning documentaries on Irish subjects, as well as the dramatic feature Proud. She’s been an associate producer on Good Morning America and Saturday Night Live, written books on Martin Scorsese, World War II, and Bosnia, and a novel based on her experiences as a former nun – Special Intentions. She is a frequent contributor to Irish America Magazine and has a PhD in English and Irish literature.

It’s so worth it! I usually read very fast, but this one, it’s worth savoring the whole book. I’ve never been in love with a book like this since The Bronze Horseman by Paulinna Simons and The Tea Rose by Jennifer Donnelly.

I believe that you can fall in love at first sight but that it won’t necessarily last.

Yes, for some people when the timing is right, I believe in love/lust at first site!
Even, if a couple has know each other for years, there are no guarantees.
This books sounds like a great one to read. I have read some reviews and good things about it. My paternal grandmother came to the United Stated from Calais, France at a very young age! They came over on a cattle ship and it took two weeks to get here. Many of the people didn’t survive. We have the ship’s manifest with her parents and her name on it! My dad is almost 91, so that was a long time ago. I never got to even meet her because I am the youngest in our family. Please enter me in your delightful book giveaway drawing. Many thanks, Cindi

I”m with you on lust. Otherwise, how else is the attraction thing going to work? Loving one’s personality comes after you’ve noticed them first, and that’s lust.

I met my husband on April 3, 1981, went on a date April 6, of the same year and he proposed to me that night. We are happily married now for 28 yrs. We have three grown children and three grandchildren. My husband is a keeper, and my true soulmate…so yes, I believe in love at first sight. We still go on dates, and he holds my hand everywhere we go.
Please enter me in your giveaway…I would love to read this book! Thank you.

I do believe in affinity at first sight, but that love comes from knowing someone because it isn’t so much a feeling as a choice and commitment.
Thank you for hosting this giveaway, I’d love to read this book. I’ve loved two books other books about the potato famine, Peter Behrens’s The Law of Dreams, and Jane Urquhart’s Away, so I have a feeling I’ll like this, too.

I wish I believed in love at first sight, but sadly, I just don’t. On the other hand, if it happened to me . . .
Thanks for the chance to read this book – I’ve heard nothing but good things about it!

Absolutely I believe in love at first sight. I met my husband in January 1980 and by his birthday in mid February we knew we would be married. I was very young (16) but I knew without a doubt that I loved him from the first moment I saw him. We married in July 1980. We separated a few years into our marriage but that was more from stupidity than not loving each other. Happily we got back together within a year and have been together for 29 years. I truly hope we have another 29 years together.
One other area that I have experienced love at first sight is when my children and grandchildren were born.
The feeling that fills your heart when you lay eyes on the one you are destined for is amazing and wonderful.
Thanks!

I don’t believe in love at first sight. I think to truly love someone you have to know them well & be good friends as well as lovers. Now…….I do believe in lust at first sight!
Please count me in – Thanks!

I do believe in love (and lust!) at first site. I met my husband in the fall of our junior year of high school. I saw him in the hall and before I even knew his name I had decided that he was the guy for me. And he was was. We went together through the rest of high school and college before we got married and that was 22 years ago. The love changes over the years but it gets more comfortable and stronger. He is my best friend. I think you need that foundation to make it last. The purest love I’ve ever felt was for my children when they were born. It was absolutely the most powerful feeling I’ve ever had in my life.
I wasn’t sure if i would be interested in this book but I’ve been hearing the best things about it. I think I need to read it now. Please include me and thanks for your contest!

Sorry, no love at first sight here. I think real love takes time. I was attracted to my husband at first sight, but love? Nope.
I’d love to read this book. It sounds great. Please enter me. Thanks.

Love at first sight can happen but only because they have things such as life goals in common. Generally I do not believe in it as appearance cannot tell you anything about a person’s character or goals.
Thank you for entering me. I would love to read this story.
